Nouns (İsimler)

İngilizce eğitiminde başarılı olmak, özellikle akademik sınavlardan iyi not almak için isimler konusunun detaylı bir şekilde öğrenilmesi çok önemlidir.

Adlar kişiler, hayvanlar, yer, nesne, olay,  nitelik, etkinlik ve soyut fikirleri isimlendiren sözcüklerdir. Ahmet, Mehmet gibi isimler de bu tanıma pekala uyar. Ama “nouns” kavramı bundan çok daha geniştir.

“Nouns” (adlar); bir dilde "kim, nerede ve nedir" sorularını yanıtlayan kelimelerdir.

Her cümlede mutlaka bir ad bulunur. Bu nedenle adlara cümle kurucular veya cümlenin yapı taşları denebilir.


Examples;

- The cat sleeps. (Kedi uyur.) (Hayvan ismi)

- Sakarya is a city. (Sakarya bir şehirdir.) (Yer ismi)

- He is reading a book. (O bir kitap okuyor.) (nesne ismi)

- Too many accidents happen in our country. (Ülkemizde çok sayıda kaza olur.)

- I love freedom. (Özgürlüğe bayılırım.) (Fikir adı)

- She is nice. (O güzeldir.) (Nitelik adı)

- She has no courage. (Onun cesareti yok.) (Soyut kavram)

- Turkey is a lovely country. (Türkiye güzel bir ülkedir.) (yer ismi)

- Arda is a handsome boy. (Arda yakışıklı bir çocuktur.) (insan ismi)


► Kelimeyi isim yapan son ekler

Bazen kelimenin sonuna gelen ekten, o kelimenin isim olduğunu anlayabiliriz.

Examples;

Teach: Öğretmek (Fiil)
Teacher: Öğretmen (İsim)

Happy: Mutlu (Sıfat)
Happiness: Mutluluk (İsim)

A noun is a part of speech that denotes a person, animal, place, thing or an idea. The word "noun" means "name" in Latin. In every language on earth, there are words that are called nouns. 

 

Here are some examples of nouns of different categories;

 

Person – A term for a person, whether proper name, gender, title, or class, is a noun.

Animal – A term for an animal, whether proper name, species, gender, or class is a noun.

Place – A term for a place, whether proper name, physical location, or general locale is a noun.

Thing – A term for a thing, whether it exists now, will exist, or existed in the past is a noun.

Idea – A term for an idea, be it a real, workable idea or a fantasy that might never come to fruition is a noun.


Examples of nouns

It might be a bit difficult to identify differents parts of speech at first but as you keep practicing it will be much easier. The examples below show nouns in sentences.

Animal Dogs usually don't like cats.

Place – The cinema has a great sound system. 

Place – Let’s go to a nice restaurant for dinner. 

Place – Can you come here please?

Place – Let's go there tonight. 


 

Thing – Can you pass the salt, please?

Thing – Turn on the TV.

Thing – I bought a new car.

Thing – There are some great buildings in the city


 

Idea – You should follow the rules in a library. 

Idea – The theory of relativity is an important concept.

Idea - Love is a great ocean. 

 

Note: It is not always possible to identify a noun by its form. But some word endings can show that the word is probably a noun.
