Walk – walked – walked
Work - worked - worked
Dance - danced - danced
Paint – painted – painted

We use verbs in different forms to show tense, mood, number (singular or plural), and person (first person, second person, or third person). Verbs in English are divided into two main categories;

- Regular verbs
- Irregular verbs

REGULAR VERBS

Many English verbs are regular and they form their different tenses according to an established pattern. Look at the examples below;

- I showed him my new car.

- They all laughed at my joke.

- I wanted to become a doctor when I was a kid.

► Irregular Verbs in Present Simple Tense

In the present simple tense, the basic form of a regular verb only changes in the 3rd person singular, as follows:

- Most verbs just add -s to the basic form.

take - takes
look - looks

- With verbs that end with a vowel other than e, we add "-es"

go - goes
do-does

- With verbs that end with -s, -z, -ch, -sh, and -x, we add "-es"

kiss - kisses
punch - punches
wash - washes

- If the verb ends in a consonant plus -y, we change the "y" to an "i" before adding "-esx"

hurry - hurries
clarify - clarifies

- But if the verb ends in a vowel plus "-y", we just add "-s"

play - plays
enjoy - enjoys

► Irregular Verbs in Past Tense

While forming the past simple tense of regular verbs, we use the same form for the first, second, and third persons, singular and plural.

- If the basic form of the verb ends in a consonant or a vowel other than "e," add the letters "-ed" to the end

seem - seemed
laugh - laughed
look - looked

- For verbs that end in "-e", add "-d"

love - loved
hope - hoped

- When the verb ends in a consonant plus "-y", we change the "y" to an "i" before adding -"ed"

hurry - hurried
clarify - clarified

- But if the verb ends in a vowel plus "-y", just add "-ed"

play - played
enjoy - enjoyed

► Irregular Verbs and Past Participle

While forming the past participle of regular verbs, we follow the same rules as for the past simple tense.

► Irregular Verbs and Present Participle

- When the basic form of the verb ends in a consonant or a vowel other than "e", we add the ending "-ing"

laugh - laughing
boo - booing

- When the verb ends in "e", we drop the "e" before adding "-ing"

love - loving
hope - hoping

- When the basic form ends in "y", we just add "-ing"

hurry - hurrying
clarify - clarifying
