Auxiliary Verbs (Yardımcı fiiller): am/is/are

Present Continuous Tense ile cümle kurulurken am / is / are yardımcı fiilleri kullanılır ve fiilin sonuna -ing takısı getirilir. Aşağıda bu zamanın kullanımıyla ilgili tablo yer almaktadır.

USE OF PRESENT CONTINOUS TENSE (ŞİMDİKİ ZAMANIN KULLANIMI)

► USE 1 - Now (Şimdi)

► We use the Present Continuous with Continuous Verbs to express the idea that something is happening now, at this very moment. (Present Continuous Tense bir şeyin tam şu anda olduğunu veya yapıldığını anlatmak için kullanılır.)

Examples;

- You are learning English now. (Şu anda İngilizce öğreniyorsun.)

- You are not sleeping now. (Şimdi uyumuyorsun.

- I am sitting. (Oturuyorum.

- I am not standing. (Ayakta durmuyorum.)

- What are you doing? (Ne yapıyorsun?)

- I am teaching English. (İngilizce öğretiyorum.)

- Madonna is riding a bike. (Madonna bisiklet sürüyor.)

- Joe is smoking. (Joe sigara içiyor.)

- Bill Gates is travelling by plane. (Bill Gates uçak ile seyahat ediyor.)

- Jane is taking a photograph. (Jane fotoğraf çekiyor.)

- People are waiting for bus. (İnsanlar otobüs bekliyor.

- Why aren’t you doing your homework? (Niye ödevini yapmıyorsun?)

► USE 2 Longer Actions in Progress Now (Halen devam eden uzun süreli olaylar)

►  In English, now can mean "this second," "today," "this month," "this year," "this century" and so on. Sometimes we use the Present Continuous to say that we are in the process of doing a longer action which is in progress.

(İngilizce’de "now" yani "şimdi" şu anlamlara gelir.

Examples;
(Aşağıdaki bütün örnekler bir lokantada yemek yerken söylenebilir)

 - I am studying to become a doctor. (Doktor olmak için çalışıyorum.)

-  I am not studying to become an engineer. (Mühendis olmak için çalışmıyorum.)

- I am reading a book. (Bir kitap okuyorum.)

- I am not reading any newspapers right now. (Şu anda hiç bir gazete okumuyorum.)

- Are you working on any special projects? (Özel bir proje üzerinde çalışıyor musun?)

► USE 3 Near Future (Yakın Gelecek)

Sometimes, speakers use the Present Continuous to indicate that something will or will not happen in the near future.

(Bazen Present Continuous Tense bir şeyin o anda değil de yakın bir zamanda olacağını veya olmayacağını anlatmak için kullanılır.)

Examples;

- I am meeting some friends after work. (İşten sonra arkadaşlarla buluşuyoruz.)

- I am not going to the party tonight. (Bu gece partiye gitmiyorum.)

- Isn’t he coming with us tonight. (O bu gece bizimle gelmiyor mu?)

► USE 4 Complaining with "Always" ("Always" kullanarak şikayette bulunma)

The Present Continuous with words such as "always"  expresses the idea that something  often happens. Notice that the meaning is like Simple Present but with negative emotion.

Examples;

- She is always coming to class late. (Derse hep geç kalıyor.)

- He is always talking. (O sürekli konuşur.)

- I don’t like them because they are always complaining. (Onları sevmem çünkü hep şikayet ederler.)

- My brother is always wearing my shirts without asking me. (Kardeşim hep bana sormadan tişörtlerimi giyer.)

- Mary is always late for work. Someone should warn her. (Mary hep işe geç kalıyor. Birisi onu uyarmalı.)

- She is constantly speaking. I wish she would shut up. (Sürekli konuşuyor. Keşke biraz sussa.)

- You are forever talking about your father-in-law. (Sürekli kayınpederin hakkında konuşuyorsun.)

► Bazı fiiller Present Continuous Tense ile kullanılmaz. Bu fiiller "state verbs" olarak adlandırılır.

Şimdiki zaman yapıları bir eylemin fiziksel ve görsel olarak yapıldığını gösterirler. Dolayısıyla soyut düşünmek, sevmek, anlamak, sahip olmak gibi soyut anlamlı fiiller continuous (be+ -ing) yapısında kullanılamazlar. Bu fiiler Simple Tense ile ifade edilirler . Örneğin “I love you” Simple Present tense ile yazılmasına rağmen, Türkçe’ye “Seni seviyorum“ diye çevrilir.

- She is loving chocolate. - Yanlış
- She loves chocolate. - Doğru

- I am hating you  - Yanlış
- I hate you  - Doğru

- She isn’t understanding me  - Yanlış
- She doesn’t understand me  - Doğru

Bu fiillerden bazıları aşağıda verilmiştir.

- Mental State (Zihinsel Durumlar)

know, realize, understand, recognize
believe, feel, suppose, think
imagine, doubt, remember, forget
want, need, desire, mean

- Emotional State (Duygusal Durumlar)

love, like, appreciate, please, prefer
hate, dislike, fear, envy
mind,care
astonish, surprise, amaze

- Possession (Sahip Olma)

have, belong, possess, own

- Sense, Perception (Duyular, Algalama)

taste, smell, hear, feel, see

- Other Stative Verbs (Diğer Fiiller)

look, seem, appear, sound, resemble, look like
cost, owe, weigh, equal
be, exist, matter,
consist of, include,contain

► Bazı fiiller de hem Continuous hem de Simple formda kullanılabilirler. "love - like - hate - understand" gibi fiiller bu kategoriye girer. Fakat bu farklı kullanım, anlam farklılılığına da yol açar. Aşağıda iki zamanla da kullanılabilen ve farklı anlamlar taşıyan fiiller verilmiştir.

- THINK

(a) “What do you think about the new English teacher? I think he is a nice man !”
(Yeni İngilizce öğretmeni hakkında ne düşünüyorsun? Bence iyi bir adam.)

(b) I am thinking about the exam tomorrow. It will be a difficult one.
(Yarınki sınavı düşünüyorum. Zor bir sınav olacak.)

(a) cümlesinde think, fikir gösteren soyut anlamlı bir fiildir. Kişilerin belli konularda fikir sahibi olmaları fiziksel bir durum değildir. (b) cümlesinde ise think , fiziksel ve görülebilir bir özelliği olan somut bir eylemdir. Örneğin birşey düşündüğünü görerek anladığımız bir kişiye “Öyle derin derin ne düşünüyorsun?” diye sorarız. Düşünme eylemi fiziksel bir durum olmuştur.

- HAVE

(a) I have two cats and a dog. Do you have any pets? (Benim bir köpeğim ve bir de kedim var. Senin evcil hayvanın var mı?)
(b) I am having a nice time in my speaking classes. (Konuşma sınıflarında hoş vakit geçiriyorum.)

Birinci cümlede “have” fiili sahip olmak anlamında asla continuous olarak kullanılamaz. İkinci örnekte ise “have” fiili iyi zaman geçirmek, eylenmek anlamında somut bir yapıdadır.

- SMELL

(a) All flowers smell nice. (Bütün çiçekler güzel kokar.)
(b) The little girl is smelling the flowers. (Küçük kız çiçekleri kokluyor.)

Birinci cümlede “smell” soyut bir eylemdir. Çiçekler kokma eylemini fiziksel ve görülebilir bir şekilde yapmazlar. Bu bir durumdur. İkinci cümlede ise “smell” fiili aktif bir anlamdadır. Küçük kızın bu koklama eylemini fiziksel olarak yapması görülüp, başkalarına da gösterilebilir.

TIME expressionS IN PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
(ŞİMDİKİ ZAMANDA ZAMAN BELİRTEN İFADELER)

Time expressions zaman belirten ifadelerdir ve İngilizce’de her zaman için farklı ifadeler kullanılır. Özellikle sınavlarda cümlenin hangi tense olduğunu anlamak için time expression’ların bilinmesi çok önemlidir.

- At the moment / now (şu anda / şimdi)
The students are studying in the classroom at the moment / now. (Şu anda öğrenciler sınıfta ders çalışıyorlar.)

- At present (Şu anda)
At present
all the farmers in the village are harvesting their crops. (Köydeki çiftçiler şu anda mahsüllerin topluyorlar.)

- For the time being (Şu esnada)
My father will buy a new car soon. For the time being he is using mine. (Babam yeni bir araba alacak. Şu esnada benimkini kullanıyor.)

Ayrıca "Look! Listen! Be Careful!" gibi ünlemler de arkasından gelecek cümlenin şimdiki zaman olacağını gösterir. Özellikle sınavlarda bu ipuçlarını yakalamak çok önemlidir.

- Listen! Somebody is following us. (Dinle! Birisi bizi takip ediyor.)
- Look ! A car is coming. (Baksana! Bir araba geliyor.)

► Spelling Of Final –ing (-ing takısının yazılışı)

Fiilin son harfine bağlı olarak bazen -ing takısı farklı şekillerde yazılabilir. Aşağıdaki bu konuyla ilgili kurallar verilmiştir.

- Bir sessiz harf + -e gelirse -e düşer ve –ing eklenir.

dance - dancing
ride - riding
take - taking

- Bir sesli + Bir sessiz harf gelirse sessiz harf çift yazılır ve – ing eklenir.

cut - cutting
plan - planning
run - running

NOT: w,y, ve x harfleri çift yazılmaz.

snow - snowing
fix - fixing
pay - paying

- İki sesli + bir sessiz harf varsa -ing eklenir; sessiz harf çift yazılmaz

keep - keeping
read - reading

- İki sessiz harf varsa -ing eklenir; sessiz harf çift yazılmaz

sing - singing
wash - washing

FORM

The present continuous (also called the present progressive) tense in English is very easy to use and is same for all verbs. We make it using the present simple of 'be' + verb-ing:

Affirmative Negative Interragotive
I am walking I am not walking Am I walking?
You are walking You aren't walking Are you walking?
He/she/it is walking He/she/it isn't walking Is he/she/it walking?
We are walking We aren't walking Are we walking?
They are walking They aren't walking Are they walking?

CONTRACTIONS

Long Form Short Form
I am walking I'm walking
You are walking You're walking
You are not walking You aren't walking
He is walking He's walking
He is not walking He isn't walking

For 'wh' questions, just put the question word at the front:

Why is she running so fast?
What are you reading now?
When is he going home?
What are we doing tomorrow after school?
Why is it raining?

USE

1- Unfinished Actions

We use the present continuous for things that are happening at the moment of speaking. These things usually last for quite a short time and they are not finished when we are talking about them.

I'm reading a great book at the moment.
Kids are playing in the garden now.
Suzie is sleeping.

2- Temporary Situations

We can also use this tense for other kinds of temporary situations, even if the action isn't happening at this moment.

John's working in a coffee as a waiter until he finds a better job. (He might not be working now.)
She's staying with her uncle for a week.

3- Temporary Habits

We can use the present continuous for temporary or new habits. We often use this with expressions like 'these days' or 'at the moment'.

He's working a lot these days.
She's running every morning (she didn't use to do this).
You're playing computer games too much.

4- Annoying Habits

Another  use is for habits that are not regular, but that happen very often. We usually use an adverb like 'always', 'forever' or 'constantly' for this kind of use. We use the present continuous in this way to talk about an annoying habit.

You're forever losing your books!
She's constantly missing the school bus.
Lucy's always crying in the classroom!

5- Definite Future Plans

If we have already made a plan and we are pretty sure that the event will happen in the future, we can use present continuous tense. In other words, we use present continuous tense for definite future arrangements.

I'm going to Antalya tomorrow.
We're leaving the school at 4 PM.
I'm flying to New York next month.

Note: We can't use this tense (or any other continuous tense) with stative verbs.

I love you (Not I am loving you)
I understand you (Not I am understanding you)
