To Be (am-is-are)

"TO BE" etrafımızdaki nesneleri nitelemek, özelliklerini, yerlerini ve konumlarını belirtmek istediğimizde kullanacağımız temel fiildir. İngilizce bir cümle kurarken her zaman bir yükleme ihtiyaç duyulur. İçinde yüklem bulunmayan hiçbir yapı cümle olamaz.


"Mary şişmandır" veya "Jane güzeldir" gibi cümlelerde ilk bakışta bir yüklem görülemez. Bunlar Türkçe dilbilgisinde isim ve sıfat fiillerdir. Oysa İngilizce'de isim ve sıfat fiil diye yapılar yoktur.İşte isim ve sıfat cümleleri kurarken bu boşluğı biz olmak (to be) fiili ile kapatırız.

Kısaca TO BE yani olmak fiili ya bir nesneyi yada nesneyi niteleyen sıfatı belirtir. İçinde ( dır-dir ) anlamı saklamaktadır.To be cümleleri kesinlikle eylem cümlesi değildirler.İçinde hareket,ivme içeren hiçbir yapıyı anlatamazlar (gitmek,koşmak,gelmek….)

Mary is a teacher (Mary bir öğretmendir)

► To be + fiil kesinlikle olmaz

QUESTIONS AND NEGATIVES (OLUMSUZ VE SORU CÜMLELERİ)

"am-is-are" yardımcı fiiliyle yapılan cümleleri soru haline getirmek için sadece yardımcı fiil cümlenin başına getirilir. Olumsuz yaparken ise yardımcı fiilden sonra 'not' getirilir. Bu kalıp İngilizce'nin bütün zamanlarında aynıdır.

The verb to be is definitely the most important verb in the English language. Some people call it "the spine of English.”  It is an irregular verb in all of its forms and it is the most irregular, slippery verb in the language.

USE

 

1- The principal use of the simple present is to refer to an action or event that takes place habitually, but with the verb "to be" the simple present tense also refers to a present or general state, whether temporary, permanent or habitual.

am generous.

She is supportive.

 

2- The verb to be in the simple present can be also used to refer to something that is true at the present moment.

She is 20 years old.

He is a student.

 

Remember:

  • I, you, he, she, it, you, they are subject pronouns (also called personal pronouns, a term used to include both subject and object pronouns.)
  • am, are, is are forms of the verb to be in the simple present.
  • 'm, 're, 's are short (contracted) forms of  am, are, is
  • 'm not, aren't, isn't are short (contracted forms) of am not, are not, is not.

 

3- The verb be is also used in the following patterns:

 

- with a noun:

My father is a doctor.
Barack Obama was the president of the US.

 

- with an adjective:

This pizza is very tasty.
The players were bad.

 

- with the -ing form

We are running in the forest.
They were watching a movie.

 

- with the -ed form to make the passive voice

The school was built in 2001.
The film is called Matrix.

 

- with a prepositional phrase:

Michelle and his wife are from London.
The keys are on the table.

 

OTHER USES

 

The verb to be can be used as 3 different types of verbs.

- State-of-being 
Johnny is here today. (Johnny is being, and he's doing it here.) 

 

- Helping
Cathy is listening to music. (Is helps listening show that it is ongoing.) 

 

- Linking

My father is very rich. (Is links my father and the adjective rich.)
