Bu zaman, aynı Present Perfect Continuous Tense'de olduğu gibi geçmişte yaşanan ve belirli bir süreci kapsayan eylemleri anlatmak için kullanılır. Fakat bu zamanın kullanılabilmesi için geçmişte yaşanan ve bir süre devam eden eylemin, başka bir eylemden önce yaşanmış olması gerekir.
Bu yapı “Yapmaktaydım / yapıyordum” şeklinde Türkçe'ye tercüme edilebilse de, cümlenin durumuna göre farklı tercümeleri de olabilir.
Başka bir deyişle bu zaman, geçmişte bir eylemin başladığını ve geçmişte yaşanan başka bir eyleme kadar devam ettiğini ifade etmek için kullanılır.
"Beş dakika boyunca" veya "iki hafta boyunca" gibi zaman ifade eden kalıplar bu tense ile kullanılabilir.
Bu zamanın kullanımı Present Perfect Continuous Tense'in kullanımına benzer, fakat bu zamanda bahsedilen eylem bu güne kadar sürmemektedir.

- I had been waiting there for two hours before she finally arrived. (O vardığında orada iki saattir otobüs
beklemekteydim.)
- She had only been studying English for years before she got the job. (İşe girmeden önce sadece iki yıl
boyunca İngilizce çalışmıştı.)
- They had been talking for over an hour before Tony arrived. (Tony varmadan önce bir saatten fazla bir süredir konuşmaktaydılar.)
- Had she been working at that company for three years when it went out of business? (Şirket batmadan önce üç yıldır o şirkette mi çalışmaktaydı?)
- James had been teaching at the university for more than a year before he left for Asia. (James Asya'ya gitmek için ayrılmadan önce bir yıldan fazla bir süredir üniversitede eğitim veriyordu.)
- James was tired because he had been jogging. (James yorgundu, çünkü yürüyüş yapmıştı / yapmaktaydı.)
USE OF PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE
► KULLANIM 1
The Past Perfect Continuous geçmişte başka bir eylemden önce gerçekleşmekte olan eylemin sürecinden bahsederken kullanılır.
Examples;
- The passenger at the bus stop were very angry. They had been waiting for the bus for 45 minutes. (Duraktaki yolcular çok sinirliydi. 45 dakika boyunca otobüsü beklemekteydiler.)
- The detectives had been searching for the murderer for a long time before they arrested him. (Dedektifler, tutuklamadan önce uzun süre katili araştırmışlardı / araştırmaktaydılar.)
- He had only been studying French for two years before he got the job. (İş bulmadan önce iki yıl boyunca Fransızca çalışmıştı.)
- My father had been working for that company before it finaly went bankrupt. (Sonunda iflas ettiğinde babam o şirkette çalışmaktaydı.)
► KULLANIM 2
Past perfect continuous geçmişte zaman olarak yakın başka bir eylemden önce gerçekleşmekte olan bir eylemden bahsederken de kullanılabilir.
Examples;
- John was out of breath when he came in. He had been jogging. (John geldiğinde nefes nefeseydi. Yürüyüş yapıyormuş.)
- When I saw Mary, her eyes ver red. She had been crying. (Mary'yi gördüğümde gözleri kıpkırmızıydı. Ağlıyormuş.)
- Brian gained overweight because he had been overeating. (Brian çok fazla kilo aldı, çünkü çok fazla yiyor / yemekte.)
► Past Perfect Continuous Tense genellikle "by" zaman ifadesi ile kullanılır.
- By the time I got home, he had been sleeping for an hour. (Eve vardığımda, bir saattir uyumaktaydı.)
- By the time you called me, I had been doing my homework for five hours. (Sen beni aradığında, beş saattir ödev yapmaktaydım.)
► KULLANIM 3
Past Perfect Continuous Tense, geçmişte bir süre devam etmiş bir eylemin, şu anda belirgin bir etkisi varsa kullanılır. Böyle durumlarda, konuşma anında eylemin bitip bitmemesinden çok, mevcut belirtileri ve etkileri önemlidir.
Examples;
- She was out of breath. It was clear that she had been running. (Nefesi kesilmişti. Belli ki koşuyordu.)
- Her hands were all in paint. He had been painting the house. (Elleri boya içindeydi. Evi boyuyordu.)
- They cried sadly when they left the town. Because they had been living there since their childhood. (Kasabadan ayrılırken acı acı ağladılar. Çünkü çocukluklarından beri orada oturmaktaydılar.)
- When the man entered the room the people in the room blushed as they had been talking about him. (Odaya girdiğinde odadaki insanlar onu çekiştirdiklerinden dolayı kızardılar.)
- I didn't want to travel on that bus. Because the driver had been drinking. (O otobüsle seyahat etmek istemedim. Çünkü şoför içkiliydi.)

- He finally arrived at 6 o'clock. I had been waiting for him since 3 o'clock. (Sonunda saat 6'da gelebildi. Saat 3'ten beri onu bekliyordum.)
- John had been walking to school before his father bought him a bicycle. (Babasi ona bisiklet almadan once, John okula yuruyerek gidiyordu.)
- We had been planning to go to Antalya but we changed our minds when we found a cheap motel in Fethiye. (Antalya'ya gitmeyi planliyorduk fakat Fethiye'de ucuz bir motel bulunca fikrimizi degiştirdik.)
- It was 4.00 A.M. I had been the story grammer for 8 hours. (Saat sabah 4'te sekiz saattir hikaye yazıyordum.)
- I had been focusing on the details of "The Past Perfect Continuous Tense" for hours when somebody knocked the door. (Birisi kapiyi tikladiginda saatlerce "The Past Perfect Continuous Tense"nin detaylanna odaklaniyordum.)
